General Motors Partnership

The employees of UAW Local 774 and General Motors Powertrain - Tonawanda Engine have interacted with the students at Buffalo Public School #53. "A World in Motion" (AWIM) is a program developed through the Society of Automotive Engineers to bring teachers, students, and industry leaders together in an exploration of physical science in the classroom. The program is comprised of a series of "challenges" for students in grades 4-10.

Tonawanda Engine successfully completed the first session with the 8th, 4th and 7th grade students. Tara Wasik, coordinator, said, "When the session started, the students didn't quite know what to expect. They were a little hesitant and resistant, but as time went on, strong relationships developed and excitement grew every week. The students were very engaged and strived to be the best!"

In June, the UAW Local 774 initiated a reading program with grades K - 6. The teachers encouraged everyone to read books for fun and enjoyment. There were pizza parties, pep rallies, weekly posters, laminated bookmarks, and great prizes. Local 774 purchased four bikes that were given to students at the graduation ceremony. Also, two trophies were donated for the Most Outstanding Students.
